LONDON LEOPARDS TAKE U-TURN ON BBL ENTRY
London Leopards have opted against joining the British Basketball League for next season, despite their application to step up receiving support.
The Brentwood-based outfit had been in extended talks with BBL officials to complete the switch for almost six weeks since being given the go-ahead to move up from the EBL.
However club bosses have had a re-think on accepting the promotion and will now stay in Division One for at least one more year.
“We have been working closely with the BBL now for a number of months to bring top level basketball back to Essex and feel the decision to remain in the EBL for one more season is the right one for the long-term sustainability of the Leopards,†said the club’s managing director Gareth Roberts told The Echo.
“However, we are continuing to work with the BBL and hope to be able to confirm our position for the 2013-14 season shortly.â€
BBL officials expect to be able to confirm Manchester Giants entry next month with increasing signs that Mersey will remain in the top tier despite criticism over the debts owed to players from the past two seasons.
