GB Adidas Promo: Sending the Wrong Message?

Team GB Basketball Adidas Promo Snoop Dogg
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, I’m sure you’ve seen the recent GB Adidas Promo that was released showing Snoop Dogg, Warren G and Phillips Idowu playing some of the GB players 3 on 3.

My initial reaction to it was pretty good. I mean, how could it be bad? Great exposure for the team being featured by such a big brand, and alongside such huge names. The video already has 300,000+ views and counting, and has been featured all over the web.

However, the more and more feedback I read, the more I question whether having a couple of rappers and a triple jumper beating our country’s best basketball players in a 3 on 3 is sending the wrong message (?).

The Daily Mail is saying Team GB will have to “raise their game” if they can’t win a game as easy as that, ESPN are of a similar thinking, believing the main takeaway is that “America’s so good at basketball that our rappers and All-Star Celebrity Game alumni are better than Britain’s actual Olympic basketball players”, whilst hundreds of Youtube commenters seem to genuinely believe that Snoop, Warren G and Idowu are actually better than Team GB.

Not only could the ad be seen as mocking GB but also reinforce the general (wrong) perception by many that the GB basketball team are a joke.

I’m still sitting on the fence about it, but would be interested to hear your thoughts.

What do you think? Harmless bit of fun or have Adidas got it all wrong?
