‘Brighton Madness’ Tribute to Descend Upon Beach Court

Brighton Madness‘Brighton Madness’, the latest attempt to bring back a legitimate competition to Brighton’s famous beach court, will take place this weekend, and has been dedicated to the memory of a player who used the beachfront court regularly.

Shaun Pinkney, 32, a local basketball player from Hove, died earlier this year.

“We are proud to dedicate this tournament to the life of Shaun Pinkney,” said England Basketball’s Miguel Tello, one of the organisers of the event.

“I played some great games with him on the beachfront in Brighton. What better way to remember him than through the sport he enjoyed.”

The tournament taking place on Brighton Seafront this Saturday 20th August combines basketball with a number of other urban elements including parkour, street dance, boxing and performances from artists.

Barbers will be on hand all day if you need to keep that fresh look, and there will be a fitness session for the less active of us at the event, which has been organised by UrbanElite team, supported by Basketball Sussex, Active Sussex and the local authority.

Over 200 players from Brighton, London and beyond are expected to take part in the streetball event, which is free to enter.

“The message of the event is one of health, respect and community values,” said Miguel Tello. “We will see some high level playing on Saturday. It will be a fitting tribute to Shaun, who will be sadly missed.”
