GB U20 Women Suffer Heartbreaker to Slovakia

The Great Britain Under-20 Women suffered a heartbreaking loss in their European Championship opener on Thursday as they lost 39-38 on a last second shot from Slovakia.

Slovakia’s Marta Palenikova made a lay-up with two seconds left to give Slovakia redemption for the loss in last year’s Division B final.

It capped a thrilling finish after Britain had rallied to take the lead for the first time in the game with five minutes to go.

Jennings was disappointed after the game:

“We simply did not play well enough in technical areas of the final execution tonight. We were poor from the line and the turnovers in the first half put us on the back foot.

“I thought we improved defensively in the second half, but again made poor offensive decisions down the stretch which took us into an end-game that I’m sure we will learn from.”

Ella Clark led GB with 9 points, 7 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 blocks, while Temi Fagbenle added 8 points and 11 rebounds.

Renee Busch chipped in with 7 points and 5 rebounds.
