GB U20 Women Advance, Despite Loss to Dutch
The Great Britain Under-20 Women have advanced to the Division A European Championship quarter finals, guaranteeing themselves a top 8 finish in their first year in Division A, despite losing to the Netherlands 70-66.
Results in the rest of the group, where the Italians beat Latvia, meant the British side will advance to play Russia, winners of Group E on Friday. Head coach Damian Jennings is relieved to be in the final eight:
“Tonight we were looking for back-to-back performances and that just wasn’t to be.
“No doubt we will get a lot out of analysing our performance tomorrow. For now it is just pleasing to know we are in a quarter-final with some strong performances behind us to carry some learning and confidence forward.”
Although already eliminated, the Dutch showed no lack of fight as they held off the Brits in a close battle, surviving a late rally to secure the win.
Temi Fagbenle led GB with a 14 point, 11 rebound double-double, with Renee Busch and Kristie Sheils adding 11 points each.
Dee Hayward added 7 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals, while Ella Clark had 4 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks.
