GB women fell to 0-2 in their summer friendlies at the British Basketball Invitational at Surrey Sports Park, after falling to Cuba 61-54 on Friday night despite a 22 point-11 rebound double double performance from Julie Page.

Natalie Stafford added 10 points and 6 boards for GB, whilst Cuba were led by Yamara Amargo Delgado’s 16 (full game stats here).

Standard Life GB coach Tom Maher was disappointed but not downheartened:

“Tonight was close, we lost our nerve a little at the end, we made mistakes. The most important thing tonight was that we came to play. Cuba are always a good team, they play hard and with great passion and always put on a great show so it’s good to have them here at this tournament.”

“Julie Page didn’t have a great game yesterday but tonight with a double-double she stood out. Despite some defensive errors Stef Collins also played well for most of the game.”

Page herself was also disappointed with the result, but took heart from the performance:

“After a terrible loss and performance yesterday, although the scoreboard is disappointing, tonight we took a step closer together as a team. Our defence was good, it was really the last two minutes of the game when we let our heads drop and the scoreboard get the better of us. We will walk away from tonight’s game feeling like we did a good job and can feel more confident as a team.”

The British Basketball Tournament concludes today when the Standard Life GB women take on Latvia at 16:30 after Germany face Cuba at 13:00. Tickets are available from gameongb.com/tickets at £6 for adults and £4 for children.
