Alasdair Fraser, the 6’7″ 225lb Scottish big man currently at Maine, is having one of the the strongest freshman seasons in NCAA Division 1 that any Brit has had in a long time. Averaging a very respectable 5.7 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per outing in under 20 minutes per game (19.1), he is turning a lot of heads, with not only his performance on the court but his work ethic off it.

Writer Sam Perkins of One Bid Wonders, has published a great article documenting Fraser’s arrival at Maine and his performance this season so far, alluding to his work ethic and his hopes for the future, Perkins wrote:

More than anything, Fraser has won the respect of his Black Bears teammates through his work ethic, establishing himself as one of the hardest workers – maybe the hardest worker – on the team during his freshman season.

“He loves the game and he works extremely hard at getting better every day,” says Woodward.

“We all love Ali,” says McLemore, “he’s a great kid and a tremendously hard worker.”

When his career is over, Fraser would like to play basketball professionally – and with his citizenship in a European Union country, he could make a very good living doing so if he blossoms in college.

“I don’t think anyone could ask for more in life than to be able to do what they love as their job,” he says.

But right now, Fraser’s sights are set squarely on helping Maine go where no Black Bears have gone before.

“I want to make the NCAA Tournament – that’s my goal, that’s our goal, and I would like to reach it.” He says, before adding slyly, “Then I’d like to go back a few more times.”

With his work ethic, and the way he’s playing, his dreams don’t seem so far fetched.
