The GB Standard Life Senior Women made it 3 wins in 4 so far this summer with back to back wins over Portugal this weekend in a double header down in Surrey which will served as preparation for their Eurobasket qualifying campaign.
On Saturday, Tom Maher’s team came back from a late second quarter deficit to blow out the Portuguese side by twenty two points at Surrey Sports Park. Julie Page led the scoring for team GB with 18 pts and 6 boards, being backed up by National Player of the Year Natalie Stafford’s 13.
Sunday saw Natalie Strafford take matters into her own hands ensuring that GB didn’t dig themselves a hole early. Strafford tallied a 15 point first quarter whilst also grabbing 3 steals, willing the side to stick with Portugal. With Strafford cooling down in the second half the rest of the team shouldered the load and held their lead. Despite a late run, GB held on the win the game 73-65. Julie Page again led the scoring effort for GB with 20.
The women will now travel to Europe to play Belgium, in another two day test match, in the next stage of their preparations. Let’s hope they continue to build on these results!
