Derby Trailblazers were crowned the England Basketball League Division 1 Men’s regular season champions over the weekend after a victory over Bristol Academy Flyers coupled with a Leeds Metropolitan Carnegie loss against Manchester Magic was enough to seal the deal.
Carnegie were favourites for the title, needing a victory over the Magic to grab the title but lost 80-71 behind 27 points and 7 assists from American guard Brandon Kimborough (see Fiba Live Stats from the game). The Trailblazers however, took care of business beating the Flyers 82-76 off the back of a 21 point-6 assist performance from Matthew Shaw (FIBA Live Stats).
Speaking to England Basketball, Derby coach Clarence Wiggins said
“It’s just terrific. The guys have done an outstanding job and I’m very pleased for the club, the players, myself, my assistants, the supporters and everyone involved with the club. It’s an outstanding achievement and to win it at home, in front of our fans in those circumstances made it even more tremendous,”
