The British Basketball Federation owed £481,988 when it entered liquidation on 14 November 2025, according to Companies House filings reported by City A.M.
In its liquidation statement, the BBF said the decision followed a “significant and unanticipated reduction in income and unforeseen expenditure”.
City A.M. reported that more than £450,000 of the total debt was owed to unsecured creditors, including staff, players and contractors. HMRC was listed as the only secured creditor and recovered £6,144 in VAT from £33,066 of remaining cash, leaving £26,922 to be distributed among unsecured creditors.
City A.M. detailed that the largest creditors included travel company Gray Dawes Group, which was owed £90,085, legal firm Onside Law £64,620, KitKing Ltd £59,582 and Holiday Inn Manchester £31,747. FIBA was owed £30,152, while Basketball Wales was owed £16,900 and Basketball England £14,260.
The Yorkshire Post reports that the federation’s financial position was heavily impacted by its legal dispute with Super League Basketball, which followed the BBF’s decision to award a long-term professional league licence to GBB League Ltd. The resulting High Court challenge and associated legal costs placed significant financial strain on the federation in the months leading up to liquidation.
