An MVP performance from Tyrese Lacey led Team Black to an overtime win over Team White 101-90 in the Hoopsfix All-Star Classic 2024.
The 5’8″ guard clutched up at the end of regulation time, scoring a buzzer-beating three to tie the ball game and send it to overtime.
The fourth Myerscough product to win men’s MVP, Lacey registered 20 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals and was helped by strong performances from teammates Joe Buchanan, Tim Oboh, Devontae Dacosta and Oscar Curran – who came up big in overtime.
Lacey prompted oohs and aahs from the off with creative passes to Tyreese Perry-Huggins, who blew one highlight-play but converted a few plays after.
Ben Csernak beat the end of the first quarter buzzer with a three-ball to pull Team White within 6, as Team Black led 21-15.
It was a similar end to the second quarter, when this time Khyle Capanzana of Team Black sank a late three to tie the ball game 40-40, behind productive scoring from Nedas Cholevinskas throughout the quarter and a big Daniel Nwauzu and-one play.
In the third, Oboh went on a scoring flurry for Team Black, with three buckets in a row, topped off by a three-pointer and his team led 68-64 going into the final quarter.
However, the tides turned and it seemed Team White were due to wrap up the game in the fourth quarter as Cholevinskas screamed after knocking down a three, his third out of seven, to extend their lead by five with minutes remaining.
But suddenly they lost concentration and left the door open. Team Black scored, reducing the ball game to a three-point margin, but then fouled Cholevinskas, sending him to the line with 4 seconds on the clock.
Cholevinskas had the chance to wrap up the game but missed a pair of free throws to open the door for a dramatic finish.
Lacey made him pay, sinking a three on the buzzer to take a Hoopsfix All-Star Classic game to overtime for the first time ever.
In overtime, Curran came alive scoring two three’s in a row and also got up for a put-back and another Lacey three, in the face of his defender, was effectively the dagger as Team Black had fun following with flashy breakaway scores.
Leading Team White with 16 points, 9 rebounds and 2 assists was Cholevinskas, who could’ve been on for back-to-back MVPs if he saw out the win. Dunk contest winner Remy Udeh also had 14 points and 8 rebounds.
