LIONS SLIDE BEHIND MACAULAY EXIT
London Lions GM Brett Burman insists the club isn’t set on bringing in an American head coach to replace Vince Macaulay.
Speaking for the first time since axing the long-time play caller, the Lions supremo underlined that the BBL club are ambitious to compete domestically and in Europe – and seeking out someone who “can tick all the boxes” come the off-season following a wave of interest in the vacancy.
His decision to part company with Macaulay half-way through a three-year contract rocked the sport when it was revealed by MVP last month.
But Burman, who has put James Vear in interim charge, underlined his decision was as much about winning now than any five-year plan.
He told The Sun: “The team was hot, the team was good but there’s ebbs and flows to everything. We went into a tough stretch, lost a handful of games, we were sliding in the domestic league and back and forth in Europe.
“It’s one of those things, it’s just about direction and voice and change and in this industry – I’ve been on this end several times – when you go through the ebbs and flows you don’t really think too much about the why.
“It’s just more about ‘okay, we’re moving in a different direction’ and it was very, very amicable.
