POLLY TO WRITE FRESH STORIE IN CALGARY

Caledonia Pride’s Polly Storie believes she has landed her dream move by signing for the University of Calgary.

The 19-year-old centre from Edinburgh became one of the breakout performers in the Women’s British Basketball League this season with Caledonia Pride.

But the Great Britain Under-18 cap is primed for a trans-Atlantic switch after rejecting offers from the USA to link up with ex-GB women’s coach Damian Jennings in western Canada.

Storie said: “The assistant coach got in touch about year ago and we had some good conversations. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. I also was hearing from a lot of universities in the United States. But I spoke to Damian. We have a lot of mutual friends. And Canada seemed like a nicer place to be than the U.S.

“It’s going to be a new environment. I’ve never lived away from home before. My parents were a bit shocked but they’ve been very supportive. I think it will be a great move though because it will take me out of my comfort zone.”

Calgary’s gain is the Pride’s loss, however, with the Edinburgh outfit – who finished bottom of the WBBL – also bidding farewell to teen prospect Ella Doherty who has scored a scholarship offer from the University of Toledo in Ohio.

The overseas switch will broaden their horizons and raise their bars, Storie believes.

But she said: “I’ll just see what comes. I don’t look too far ahead. I’d like to fully play professionally and to represent Great Britain. But I’ll be set new challenges with some pressure of winning and it will be good to have that.”
