Surrey Scorchers profited instantly Great Britain starlet Cam Hildreth up to the BBL.
The 18-year-old, who will join Wake Forest University on scholarship next summer, signed for the Guildford club from Worthing Thunder for the remainder of the season on Thursday.
And in an astonishing debut in Surrey on Friday, the teen debutant hit a game-winner and 22 points as the Scorchers avoided a BBL Trophy giant killing by beating Thames Valley Cavaliers 101-100.

During the 2019/2020 NBL campaign, Hildreth averaged 20 points, six rebounds and three assists as a 17-year-old. His impressive displays both with Worthing, and also with Holy Trinity Storm in the ABL, have earned him a call-up into the GB senior men’s squad, including for the EuroBasket qualifiers against France and Germany later this month.
With junior leagues suspended, it will allow Hildreth priceless extra playing time ahead of his NCAA switch,
“Being here is very exciting for me and it’s a chance to prove myself and develop alongside Tony (Hicks) and Connor (Cashaw) – they are going to be good mentors for me on and off the court,” he said.
“Being in the BBL is going to be good for my future before I go to Wake Forest.
“Competing with BBL players who have played at a Division One level will help me be prepared for when I get out there – competing with Connor and Tony every day is great for me because they played at the Division One standard.
“Creon is a really nice guy and he’s going to be really helpful for me in the next couple of months.â€

Head coach Creon Raftopoulos added: “Danny Hildreth reached out to me and wanted to help Cam because elite sport for Under 18’s cannot go ahead.
“We were more than happy to help out with him coming into the gym with us.
“Once he was in the gym and started working out with the guys, he liked the competition of going up against former (NCAA) Division One players.
“Both Cam and Danny felt that this was the best place for him to be to continue his preparations for Wake Forest.
“I’m very happy to have a talent like Cam come in, and I’m just one of many coaches that will have played a part in his journey.â€
We have a tiny favour to ask. In 2018 we set out to make Hoopsfix sustainable by building our relationship directly with our readers. Up until now, Hoopsfix has been creating editorials, videos and podcasts to provide sorely missing coverage of the British game and its distinct culture and community.
We have funded Hoopsfix with our freelance work creating basketball media, but sadly that means not only does it fall behind our client’s priorities, but some of those clients are the same organisations we need to report objectively on putting us in a conflicted position.
We want to devote more time to our mission of helping British basketball reach its potential, and produce even more content for the basketball community by making Hoopsfix a sustainable 100% independent business funded directly by our readers through Patreon.
If everyone who enjoys our content chose to support us, our future would be much more secure. For as little as $3 per month, you can support Hoopsfix – and it only takes a minute.
We are tremendously honoured and humbled to have a community of people who value what we do, and we look forward to being at the forefront of the British game as it continues to evolve.
