Vanessa Ellis is leaving Sheffield Hatters – to coach in Austria.

The long-time Great Britain assistant coach will take over at UBI Graz in her first stint as a play caller overseas.

It follows a spell where Hatters admitted they would need to find additional support to continue in the WBBL amid warnings that the negative impact of coronavirus on finances could see them withdraw.

Ellis admitted that had an impact on her decision. “With not having a WBBL team for definite this season, it just felt right.”

But she also claimed to be “excited” about the chance to test herself overseas with her new club calling it a coup.

“I am happy and honoured that I am allowed to coach UBI Graz,” she said.

“I am really looking forward to the task and work with the team and the club and I hope so that our hard and consistent work will bring success.”

Cardiff Archers, who last week re-appointed Stef Collins as head coach and Alex Radu asAssociate Head Coach have also openly conceded their difficulties in finding the cash for a semi-professional team.

Collins also revealed she hopes to make a return to playing for Archers as well as her coaching responsibilities, after undergoing knee surgery.

“I’m hopeful that I’ll also make a return to the court,” Great Britain’s most-capped player said. “The opportunity to still play lends me to be so thankful for the support staff around our programme.”

Elsewhere, Chris Bunten has been re-appointed as coach of Newcastle Eagles.
