Tokyo Mission in Place for GB Senior Women

Great Britain’s Senior Women were being written off before beginning their preparation for FIBA Women’s EuroBasket 2019, and yet here they are as part of the final four teams.

Four wins from five has seen Chema Buceta’s side waltz into the semi-finals of a major tournament for the first time, comfortably surpassing their 9th place finish from 2015.

By virtue of their impressive 62-59 quarter-final victory over Hungary, on Thursday, GB are assured of a top-six finish which means they will take part in the 2020 Olympic Qualifying Tournament, in February.

12 spots are available for Tokyo. Hosts, Japan occupy one with 2018 World Cup winners USA taking another.

Both, however, will still take part in the Qualifying Tournaments, of which there are four in total with 16 teams competing – now including GB as one of six from Europe.

The teams are split into four groups with the top three (only the top two in groups containing USA and Japan) qualifying for the 2020 Olympics.

The draw will take place in December 2019 where GB will find out who stands in their way of another Olympic experience – and first – since playing as hosts in London 2012.

That can wait, though. For now, GB are in the brink of something truly special with two games left in Belgrade – one of which will be played for either gold or bronze.
