The international basketball tournament Red Bull Reign is bringing its search for the best streetballers to the UK this summer.
And it gives teams the chance to represent their city and country on a global stage. The one-of-a-kind basketball competition, taking place in May and June, will host qualifiers alongside 13 other countries including Russia, India and Belgium with the World Final taking place in Toronto, Canada. Teams can enter from 6pm on Thursday April 11 at www.RedBull.co.uk/Reign.
Celebrating the best of streetball culture, the high endurance and offensive-packed competition will make its debut with three qualifiers in London to earn a spot in the national final; the winner of which will earn the hottest invite to the global final in Toronto, Canada, later on in the year. The regional qualifiers will take place in multiple London locations.
Red Bull Reign uses a unique set of rules based on the gameplay of the FIBA guidelines. Each game promises to be fast-paced and exciting, having a 21-point maximum and coming to an end if a team reaches 21 before the 10-minute time cap. Making each fixture even more exhilarating – if the game finishes with a tie the team who scored the first two points will win.
Last year’s competition saw almost 8,000 participants take part from 16 different countries and five continents. Winner Wayne Mhlongo from South African team The Woodpackers had an even sweeter victory having lost out the previous year. He commented on the competition:
“Red Bull Reign has brought a whole new dimension to streetball from the unique tournament rules and format, to providing a platform and opportunity for players from different backgrounds and of all levels. As a team, the short length and fast-paced nature of the games suited us and the hype of the crowd made it that much more of a rush when we won. If you play ball, you need to get involved.â€
Speaking to RedBull.com, his teammate Siphesihle Maseko also said, “It’s not necessarily about the final, it’s about the experience.â€
The qualifiers will take place on the following dates at the following locations:
Turnpike Lane – Sunday 12th May
Clapham Common – Sat 25th May
Finsbury Park – Sunday 9th June
The UK will host a men’s and women’s tournament. Team entries cost £15 per team, with 4 players in each (3 players and 1 sub).
Red Bull Reign national finals are also being held in Hong Kong, Russia, The Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, India, Qatar, Philippines, Taiwan, Kosovo, Angola, Turkey, Montenegro and Lithuania.
We have a tiny favour to ask. In 2018 we set out to make Hoopsfix sustainable by building our relationship directly with our readers. Up until now, Hoopsfix has been creating editorials, videos and podcasts to provide sorely missing coverage of the British game and its distinct culture and community.
We have funded Hoopsfix with our freelance work creating basketball media, but sadly that means not only does it fall behind our client’s priorities, but some of those clients are the same organisations we need to report objectively on putting us in a conflicted position.
We want to devote more time to our mission of helping British basketball reach its potential, and produce even more content for the basketball community by making Hoopsfix a sustainable 100% independent business funded directly by our readers through Patreon.
If everyone who enjoys our content chose to support us, our future would be much more secure. For as little as $3 per month, you can support Hoopsfix – and it only takes a minute.
We are tremendously honoured and humbled to have a community of people who value what we do, and we look forward to being at the forefront of the British game as it continues to evolve.
