Basketball England’s board are expected to face robust questioning at their Annual General Meeting after it was revealed the governing body spent over a quarter-million pounds on its website last year.
The expenditure is revealed in the governing body’s newly-published accounts, covering the year up to 31 March 2017.
BE’s website, notable for its infrequent updates and technical glitches, is one stand-out item on a list that has seen administrative expenses rise from £920,878 to over £1.7 million inside 12 months – but with turnover almost doubling to £3.6m following an additional £1.6m secured in funding grants.
We are currently experiencing issues on our website. We are working on the problem and hoping to get it back to normal as soon as possible.

Directors’ salaries grew by almost 350% with an even larger rise in board and travel expenses.
The accounts also reveal the organisation’s largest single item of expenditure was £1.6 million spent on “participation, development and performance,†up by 408,000 from the previous year.
However, that comes amid delays in implementing a highly-touted Basketball Development Model which are also likely to be put under the spotlight at the AGM, which will be held in Manchester on Saturday following a previous postponement.
It is understood BE’s chief executive Stewart Kellett is returning after six months on leave for a “stress related illness†but his long-term future remains unclear.
We have a tiny favour to ask. In 2018 we set out to make Hoopsfix sustainable by building our relationship directly with our readers. Up until now, Hoopsfix has been creating editorials, videos and podcasts to provide sorely missing coverage of the British game and its distinct culture and community.
We have funded Hoopsfix with our freelance work creating basketball media, but sadly that means not only does it fall behind our client’s priorities, but some of those clients are the same organisations we need to report objectively on putting us in a conflicted position.
We want to devote more time to our mission of helping British basketball reach its potential, and produce even more content for the basketball community by making Hoopsfix a sustainable 100% independent business funded directly by our readers through Patreon.
If everyone who enjoys our content chose to support us, our future would be much more secure. For as little as $3 per month, you can support Hoopsfix – and it only takes a minute.
We are tremendously honoured and humbled to have a community of people who value what we do, and we look forward to being at the forefront of the British game as it continues to evolve.
