HANDY TIMING FOR SKILLS CAMP

Cleveland Cavaliers assistant coach Phil Handy is to run a skills camp in the UK later this month.

The Cavs well-respected player development specialist will arrive straight from his seat on the sidelines at the NBA Finals where his behind-the-scenes role in developing the likes of Kyrie Irving have earned him rave reviews.

Handy, who was previously with the LA Lakers, spent part of his playing career as a shooting guard at Manchester Giants as well as time overseas in Israel, France and Italy.

And he has been lured to London for a four-day clinic, running from June 29-July 3, by ex-England junior international Daniel James with a focus on upskilling both the UK’s elite coaches and players.

“In starting with them, I believe it will trigger a ripple effect for more to ride the wave and follow from the example set by our elites,” said James who has also spent time coaching overseas. “They need to understand the influence they have on the younger generation of players.

“The clinic is focused on skill development training, and right now there is nobody better in the world to do the job than Phil Handy. Skill Development is a culture of which I feel we should mirror in the UK. However, due to the lack of understanding towards it I feel we are losing precious time.

“We as a country are improving in the sport and it goes to show being that we qualified for the Euros without Luol Deng and Joel Freeland. For me, it’s not just about the Xs and Os, it is about learning how to play a game within a game, making the right move/decision at the right time and executing. It is the formula to helping create better players who can hopefully move us forward in regards to national rankings.”

Several leading Great Britain internationals have signed up for the camp with Handy set to share some of his NBA practice court secrets.

“It’s great to see someone who has been involved with basketball at the highest levels, take an active interest in players like myself – here in the UK,” said Myles Hesson. “I’m looking forward to the chance to work with Phil Handy and learn new techniques that will help me in the long run.”
