Around the NBL 16/17 – Week 12

Division One

With the top two in D1 not in action at the weekend, Manchester Magic closed the gap with a 79-86 win away at Bradford Dragons (6-5). Stefan Gill led the way with 24 points, while Simon Anumba contributed 20 points, 11 rebounds and six assists in the win. The Dragons were paced by Marcus Gooding’s 19 points along with 10 assists.

Loughborough Student Riders (6-4) have now lost four straight games after going down 69-72 at home to Hemel Storm (3-6) despite 21 points from Alex Roberts. It was a double-double of 22 points and 10 boards from Tom Adorian that helped the visitors claim their third league success.

Lyonell Gaines produced 35 points, 17 rebounds and six blocks for Worthing Thunder (2-8) but it was not enough to prevent a 70-84 home defeat against Reading Rockets (5-3). Chris Hooper led the visitors with 24 points and 11 rebounds, while Danny Carter added 19 points and 15 boards.

Lancashire Spinners (4-6) defeated Westminster Warriors (0-9) 95-86 behind 27 points from Mark Rangeley, while Leicester Warriors (3-7) recorded an 85-71 win at home to Essex Leopards (3-6). On Sunday, Solent Kestrels (5-4) finished strong to defeat London Lituanica (3-5) 72-79 on the road with Colt Fason top scoring with 24 points.

Division Two

Martelle McLemore recorded an impressive triple-double after putting up 39 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists as well as six steals to lead Thames Valley Cavaliers (8-1) to a 121-101 victory over Newham Neptunes (1-8) in D2 this past weekend. McLemore also netted 27 points the next day as the Cavaliers picked up an 80-93 road victory against Ipswich (4-6).

Kent Crusaders (8-0) still top the division and remain undefeated after easing past Liverpool (2-6) 53-98 away from home with 17 and 16 points from John Shodipo and Amin Adamu respectively. Also, Delaney Powell poured in 40 points and added 10 rebounds and six assists to guide Nottingham Hoods (4-5) to a 70-89 win away at Tees Valley Mohawks (2-6) who had 31 points from Charlton Jones.

Team Newcastle University (7-2) remain two points off the top after they recorded a 70-76 win away at Derbyshire Arrows (5-4). Fran Urli top scored with 18 points and was supported by Romonn Nelson and Richard Austin, who added 16 and 14 points respectively.

London Westside (4-5) took down Doncaster Danum Eagles (1-8) 90-80 at home on Saturday behind 28 points and 10 rebounds from Kayne Henry-McCalla, while Ipswich suffered the first of two defeats on the weekend as they were beaten 88-91 at home to London Greenhouse Pioneers (7-2) as Luca Piccini led the visitors with 33 points.

Division Three

University of Chester (8-1) picked up their eighth league win in D3 North after overcoming Team Birmingham Elite (6-2) with a 69-62 victory as Asim Khan netted 25 points. Charnwood Riders (6-2) are into joint second after 18 points from Sesan Russell helped them to a 75-69 win over Myerscough College Spinners (4-4).

Elsewhere, Worcester Wolves II (5-4) defeated Sefton Stars (0-9) 64-76 on the road behind 19 points apiece from Mark Jacobs and Dominic Ives, while Stoke-on-Trent Knights (6-3) beat Coventry Tornadoes (2-5) 72-57 and Birmingham Mets (4-4) eased past Mansfield Giants (1-8) in a comfortable 99-47 success.

In D3 South action, Middlesex LTBC (6-2) inflicted a first loss on Sussex Bears (6-1) after claiming an 83-71 home win despite 31 points from Hank Rivers. Meanwhile, Matt Yates netted 30 points for Northants Thunder (4-3) but could not prevent a 79-83 loss against Oxford Brookes University (2-5) and Cardiff Met Archers (5-3) edged out Brunel Ducks (3-3) in a 67-62 triumph.

Division Four

Team Sunderland (6-2) recorded an 85-67 victory in D4 North over Stockport Falcons (4-4) as Alan Slasor netted 27 poits, while Kendal Warriors (1-7) edged out Leeds Force Academy (3-2) 76-75 for their first win with Gareth France scoring 27 points. Calderdale Explorers (3-4) eased past Sefton Stars II (0-6) 74-104 on the road behind 44 points from Nathaniel Akins with Barrow Thorns (2-5) beating Kingston Panthers (5-4) 59-52.

In D4 Midlands, Northants Taurus (7-1) remain top after beating City of Birmingham (2-5) 74-102, while Shropshire Warriors (6-2) defeated Derby Trailblazers II (4-4) 74-79 away from home as Hoar poured in 38 points. Team Wolverhampton (5-1) beat Warwickshire Hawks (6-4) 73-63 and Truzzel Spencer led Nottingham Hoods II (2-5) with 31 points in a 68-89 win at Kings Lynn Fury (3-6).

Steve Bucknall took to the court at the age of 50 at the weekend in D4 South-East and netted 16 points to help London Lewisham Thunder (5-3) to a 69-72 road win against Barking Abbey Crusaders (5-4) with Josh Edwards adding 23 points. Kent Crusaders II (6-2) defeated Cambridge Cats (1-6) 82-87 away from home, while Folkestone Saints (4-5) were beaten 56-63 at home to Essex Blades (6-3) before losing 100-62 against Oaklands College (2-4).

In D4 South-West, Swindon Shock (6-2) are top after beating Bristol Storm (3-4) 88-76, while Tom Woods netted 32 points in an 86-59 win for Exeter Eagles (2-5) over Reading Rockets II (2-6) and Southampton University Sharks (4-4) beat Woking Blackhawks (3-3) 68-60.
