ARCHERS HIT THEIR CUP TARGET

Cardiff Archers claimed the English National Cup in Sheffield on Sunday with a 74-64 victory over Sevenoaks Suns.

Despite sitting mid-table in the WBBL, the Welsh outfit overcame a game-high haul of 30 points from Sarah Carr to do just enough in the fourth quarter to hold off their rivals and erase the disappointment of losing in last year’s final.

“It feels amazing,” said Archers coach Stef Collins, whose side were paced by 24 from Hungarian forward Judit Fritz. “It is a huge day for us as a club, last year had the heartbreak of just missing out and so today we were able to go one step further and bring the silverware home.

“It was a tough game and credit to a young energetic Sevenoaks team who were hitting some big shots today. We were able to stayed really focused and played to our strengths to get the win.”

In the men’s final, Manchester Magic emphatically swept past Reading Rockets 76-58 whose hopes of back to back crowns were blown away in the third quarter.

“It feels like it is the right time,” Magic coach Paul Middleton said. “We’ve played Reading six times and this is the first time we have beaten them. They’re a strong very well coached side but I think this was the first time we truly believed we could win.

“I thought we were outstanding defensively today. We knew they were going to push us and make it difficult but we had enough experience out there to stand our ground and get the win.”
