Brits Abroad – Week 9 Round-up

Joel Freeland contributed 6 points and 6 rebounds during a 107-93 win against Minnesota as Portland Trail Blazers (14-3) enjoyed another strong week. Luol Deng recorded his first double-double for Miami Heat (9-8) with 10 points and 10 board in the win against New York, whilst adding a week-high 16 points in the loss against Golden State.

Pops Mensah-Bonsu made his debut for Hapoel Jerusalem, in a EuroCup defeat in Russia – grabbing six rebounds and adding two points in the 69-67 loss. The forward then made his league bow at the weekend, again scoring two points in 12 minutes as his new side extended their perfect 9-0 start to the season with an 88-78 victory.

Myles Hesson scored 8 points from the start as Bremerhaven (4-7) fell to a 103-94 overtime defeat on Sunday in Bundesliga action. Dan Clark scored all of his six points from beyond the arc, whilst adding four rebounds as Fuenlabrada (1-8)suffered yet another defeat, losing 72-63 at the hands of Unicaja Malaga.

There were two all-Brit clashes in LEB Gold this weekend. Ben Allison had a game-high 17 points on 8-10 shooting to lead Ourense (6-3) to an 88-66 win against Clinicas Rincon (1-8), who were led by 13 points from Mo Soluade. Will Neighbour scored 10 points as Oviedo (4-6) were edged out at the buzzer in a 72-71 defeat at Penas Huesca (4-5) – with Joe Hart contributing one score from beyond the arc.

In the Spanish third division, Ben Mockford scored five points in a 65-63 victory as Caceres (7-2) returned to winning ways. Aaron Geramipoor scored 12 points and had 6 rebounds as Canarias (0-8) fell short in their quest for their first win in a 75-71 loss. Fellow Brit Tom Ward was recently released and has joined CB Santa Cruz in the EBA division.

Ovie Soko scored 7 points in Pro-B action as Boulazac (5-4) halted their losing slide with a 77-75 win on the road. In another battle of the Brits in NM1, Gareth Murray helped Challans (6-5) edge past Robert Marsden and Cognac (2-8) 76-75. The Scot shot 4-9 from 3-point range on his way to a game-high 17 points, while Marsden had 10 points and 8 rebounds for the visitors. Shane Walker notched 9 points and 9 rebounds, although Lourdes (7-2) were beaten 94-83 to lose ground on the league leaders.

Orlan Jackman netted five triples in a 27-point display as Iserlohn (9-1) maintained their strong run of form in the German Pro-B. Robert Gilchrist had a career-high night with 17 points and 12 rebounds on 8-11 FG shooting to help lead Karlsruhe (6-4) to a 77-62 victory. Clayfell Harris added 8 points and 7 rebounds off the bench for Itezhoe (7-4) as their six-game win streak ended with an 85-74 loss.

Ashley Hamilton converted the and-1 game-winner to help Cherkasy (7-4) beat Hoverla 87-85 – finishing with 13 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists. Den Helder (8-3) continued their winning run in the Dutch Eredivisie with an 80-60 win on the road. Nigel van Oostrum dished out three assists to go along with his 3 points coming from his only shot in the game.

In Greece, Ogo Adegboye added a single point as Aris (4-4) suffered another defeat in the A-1 league, losing 71-65. Fahro Alihodzic featured in seven minutes without scoring as AGOR (6-3) enjoyed an 88-81 win. Kormend (2-8) split their weekend games, but claimed a second league win thanks to a 24-point performance from Ryan Richards. The San Antonio draftee had also had 12 points and 8 rebounds in their defeat on Thursday.

Devon van Oostrum did not play at the weekend as Kouvot continued their winning run with a 91-77 road win against Kataja. Dzaflo Larkai did not play in either of Yokohama’s weekend defeats in Japan as they dropped to a 4-14 mark.

Justin Robinson, Matthew Bryan-Amaning and Tafari Toney also had the week off of league action with Apollon, Soles and Sorgues all not playing.
