ACHARA IN GLASGOW RETURN

Glasgow Rocks have moved swiftly to strengthen their squad by signing Great Britain co-captain Kieron Achara, with Stirling-born forward in line for an immediate debut in Sunday’s BBL Cup clash with London Lions.

The addition of the 30-year-old, who finished last season with Italian side Avellino, ends a four-month pursuit to bring the Scot to the Emirates Arena.

It will be a third spell in Glasgow for Achara but unlike his previous two short-term deals, his arrival on a one-year contract will allow Davis to build around his star acquisition.

“It’s a weird feeling,” he said. “I’m going to keep expecting him to walk into my office and tell me he’s got a job somewhere else. Having him signed for the whole season is such a positive because we know what he can bring, especially with his leadership and experience.

“It’s not just going to be just about scoring. He’s a great passer and rebounder but when we need a bucket, we can go to him. There’s a little of everything.”

With just one win out of three this term, Davis admits his new-look side are already under pressure to live up to their billing and the American is all too aware that a first round Cup exit would be a huge blow for the Rocks as they attempt to end an 11-year wait for silverware.

“I’ve spoken to the whole team about the importance of this competition and the opportunity it presents for us,” the player-coach said. “We need to bring much more energy than we showed against Surrey last weekend but Kieron can provide something extra. Sometimes, just having that new face can spur everyone on. And if we can win, it can trigger our entire season.”

Meanwhile London are hoping to have both Zaire Taylor and Lovell Cook in uniform for the Cup tie.

Taylor has now received his UK visa and will attempt to arrive in the UK before the game while Lions officials are hopeful Cook, who is already in the country, will gain his clearance from the NCAA to make his debut.
