The GB U20s were unable to build upon their opening day victory over Latvia, suffering a 53-44 loss at the hands of Hungary at the Division A European Championships on Wednesday night in Crete.
Despite trailing most of the first half, GB had a two point lead at the break, but a run from Hungary at the end of the third saw them pick up a six point lead that they wouldn’t again relinquish.
Kavell Bigby-Williams had 12 points and 9 rebounds on 6/7 shooting to lead GB, and Alex Young joined him as the only other player in double figures with 10 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists. Ben Lawson added 8 points and 7 rebounds.
“They did a very good job in getting offensive rebounds against us,” said GB Head Coach Doug Leichner after the game. “We initially did a good job of defending the first shot but unfortunately, they were better at defending the second shot.
“We’re going to work on our offensive game but on Thursday, we’re going to try to get healthy. We’ve been hit with some niggles and we desperately need that day for recovery. It will be more mental preparation for Greece than physical.”
Rowell Graham, a starter last year, is yet to play a game after suffering a nasty fall at training camp.
GB will now have a day off before facing hosts Greece on Friday at 5pm UK time.
