Newcastle Eagles Win Sixth BBL Championship

After a season without silverware the Esh Group Eagles Newcastle – the BBL’s most successful franchise of all time – have another trophy for the cabinet after beating Surrey United 106-58 on Sunday to claim the BBL Championship.

Eagles needed a victory to clinch the title and that is what they got after a 20-0 burst to start the second quarter put them in control. Newcastle will now be top seed for the BBL Play-offs where they’ll await to find out their first round opponents after a busy day of games.

Eagles player-coach Fabulous Flournoy declared “I feel fabulous,” after racking up an astonishing eighteenth piece of BBL silverware.

“There was so much anticipation coming into this weekend and getting over the line,” he stated.

“There’s a big difference in getting to the line and then successfully crossing over it.

“Now we have finally done it, I’d like to say thanks to all my team-mates since they’ve been through a lot this season.”

He continued, “I’d also like to say a thank you to the organisation, the fans and my coaching staff for putting together a good team and one that has brought silverware back to Newcastle.”

Meanwhile Managing Director Paul Blake added, “It’s been great to have been subjected to the level of competition we have experienced this year.

“I can only see it getting even tougher for the league winners during the next few BBL seasons.

“For now we can enjoy what is our eighteenth trophy in a decade.”
