SCOTLAND DOUBLE UP OVER ENGLAND

kieron_achara_568Scotland beat 74-66 England in the second leg of their two-game friendly series in Edinburgh.

Jonny Bunyan had a game-high 17 points for the Scots who had trailed by seven in the opening quarter.

However the Glasgow Rocks guard hit back-to-back threes that sparked the hosts to life in the second period as they edged 44-41 ahead at half-time.

And although Paul James side kept up the pressure, a closing 6-0 run secured a double win for Scotland.

“It was a good win,” said Kieron Achara, who added 14. “They made an early run but our young guys stepped up and carried the team.

“They’re learning and improving and if we get to the Commonwealth Games in 2018, I think there’s a really talented core.”

Leicester Riders duo Anthony Rowe and Jamell Anderson had 15 apiece for England.

“They played well,” said Anderson. “We did better second time out and we didn’t really have enough preparation. But it was a useful work out for us.”

Earlier, Scotland’s women, fielding a development line-up, lost 93-84 in overtime to Austria despite a game-high 26 points from GB Under-20 international Deanne Hayward. The hosts were out-scored 14-3 in the extra period after earlier rallying from seven down in the second quarter.
