AMAECHI LINK FOR SALFORD SCHOLARS
Salford will become the latest university to offer basketball scholarships after linking up with the Amaechi Centre in Stockport.
There are six academic and sporting excellence places on offer, claimed to total £180,000 in investment, for players willing to double up their studies with turning out for either Manchester Magic or women’s side Mystics in the EBL.
The scholarship packages also include a range of support including performance coaching, physiotherapy and massage therapy provided by the University, and nutritional support and subsidised accommodation.
In addition, two more new Scholarships are available for student athletes in the Manchester area, for Manchester Magic or Manchester Mystics players, beginning in September 2013. These students may or may not be attending the University of Salford, but will be in further or higher education in the north-west of England. One is named after former NBA player John Amaechi, £2,500 for each of 3 years, and the other for the long-term backers of his centre. Joe and Maggie Forber, worth £2,500 for each of 3 years.
“I’ve watched the reality of today’s difficult economic climate translate into young people stifling their dreams and aspirations,†said Amaechi.
“As an individual and as a founder of the Amaechi Basketball Centre, I want young people to realise that their effort and commitment in education and in sport will be rewarded, allowing them to continue to follow their dreams. With the legacy rhetoric fading fast post the Olympics, we wanted to do something tangible to recapture the spirit of the games and reignite the aspirations of young people in the north-west, and around the country.
