Young British duo Zak Wells and Harrison Gamble have both signed in Spain with EBA (fourth division) side Girona for the coming season.

Both players have been involved with England and GB junior programmes, but have remained based in the UK until now.

Wells (1993 born), who has only played basketball for two full seasons, is a 7’0″ centre who has been developed through the Barking Abbey Basketball Academy in east London. This summer he played with Dave Smart’s GB U20 side at the Division B European Championships, but saw limited action due to a concussion sustained prior to the tournament.

Speaking to Hoopsfix, Wells said he was excited to get his professional career under way:

“I am still in shock that it’s happening! Especially that it has all happened so fast. It has been a dream of mine to play in Spain and I feel it is the perfect place for me to continue to develop. I can’t wait to get out there and start learning.”

Gamble (1992 born), a 6’10” forward from the Reading Rockets programme, was one of the final cuts of the GB U20 programme the past two summers, and previous to that was involved with England Under-18s.

Reading Rockets Director of Coaching Matt Johnson has no doubt Gamble will be a welcome addition in Spain:

“We are fully behind Harrison and his new career path. Girona are getting a fantastic young man who has worked very hard to reach this point in his basketball and I am sure he will go on from there to become an excellent professional.”

Hoopsfix wants to wish both of them all the best for their careers!
