Pops Mensah-BonsuGreat Britain star Pops Mensah-Bonsu has been released by Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv after failing his medical due to arthroscopic knee surgery he underwent at the end of August.

Mensah-Bonsu was injured at the London Olympics, being forced to sit out GB’s last game against China, and ultimately, undergo surgery last last month. After undergoing a physical examination on his arrival in Israel, the club has announced the rehabilitation period will be longer than hoped for and something they didn’t want to allow to hinder their preparations for the coming season.

In a statement released on their website on Wednesday, Maccabi said:

“Although we wanted to see Pops wearing the yellow and blue this season, his anticipated lengthy rehabilitation, as well as the fact that he did not pass the physical, led to the decision – with the understanding of the player and his agent, and in accordance with the terms of the contract – that Mensah-Bonsu would be released from the club.”

Pops had originally signed a two year deal with the club in August.

We’re rooting for you Pops!
