England Return from FIBA 3×3 World Championships

England boys returned from the FIBA 3×3 World Youth Championship with a 25th place finish (out of 36 teams).

Competing in the first ever World 3×3 Championship a sport that FIBA is hoping to eventually bring to the Olympics, the team was disappointed with their final placing in Rimini, Italy.

England guard Josh McGinn said despite the disapppointment, it was a good experience:

“It was an unbelievable experience, both on and off the court. Playing with some of the top young players from around world.

“We struggled against some of the bigger, stronger teams, however ran Turkey and New Zealand close. We’re happy with the win against Croatia, a good Division A team. We gave it all we had.”

Interestingly, the competition results didn’t follow suit with what is normally seen in international basketball competition, with New Zealand being crowned champions after beating Bulgaria in the final. Italy secured the bronze, beating Estonia in the third place playoff.

It was better news for the girls however, as they got a 12th place finish (out of 24 teams), fielding the youngest team in the tournament that was won by Spain.

England’s athletic Rowell Graham did manage to make it on to FIBA’s Youtube channel with a couple of nice dunks, including the one below:
