GB Forward Pops Mensah-Bonsu has signed with French side ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne for the remainder of the season, after being released by the NBA’s New Orleans Hornets in January.

The signing of the 6’9″, 240lb Mensah-Bonsu, who is expected to be an integral part of the Great Britain side competing at Eurobasket this summer, comes after Villeurbanne lost big man Bangaly Fofana to a wrist injury.

Head Coach Nordine Ghraib is extremely pleased with the signing:

“We’re delighted with signing him. Pops meets our needs of defense an intensity. He’s extremely athletic, with good offensive abilities. His physical presence will help us tremendously in defense with the absence of Bangaly Fofana.”

Mensah-Bonsu appeared in seven games for New Orleans before being released, scoring two points and grabbing 11 rebounds in 35 minutes of action. He originally signed with ACB side Caja Laboral for the 2010/2011 season before being released prior to the beginning of the season. Pops was a key member of Team GB during their successful Eurobasket 2011 qualifying run, where they qualified at the top of their group with a 6-2 record. He led the tournament in rebounds per game, hauling down an impressive 13.5 per outing, whilst also scoring 19 ppg.
