FIBA bosses are considering lowering the height of the ring for women’s basketball – and giving players new uniforms. A good idea, or sexist?
These are just two of many suggestions to have come out of the inaugural Women’s Basketball Conference in the Czech Republic – which was attended by representatives from 49 national basketball federations.
FIBA Secretary General Patrick Baumann said: “There are differences between women and men in sport. We need therefore to look into ways of increasing the appeal of women’s basketball on and off the court.
“Reviewing the way the players are dressed and reconsidering the height of the rim are just a few ways we think might help us achieve this. We have the smaller ball and now it’s time to lower the rim. It will be tested.”
USA Basketball past president Val Ackerman, who helped spearhead the conference, said: “There was talk about lowering the rims. The notion is that no one in women’s basketball has experimented in a serious way. It’s something that might enhance the game, leading to dunking, fewer missed shots.”
