The Mallin Review – Independent Basketball Report (2007)

Mallin Review website

The Mallin Review was a 2007 independent review of basketball in England requested by then-Sports Minister Richard Caborn, and was named after the Chair of the group, Tony Mallin, CEO of STAR Capital Partners.

It came up with a number of key findings and recommendations for the growth of basketball in England – including major reform of the federation – but has become known for being widely-disregarded by the basketball administration at the time.

With basketball in disarray, it was requested by the government and was the third review done on the sport in a period of around five years.

The 11 people who formed the Mallin Review group were:

Paul Buxton, Performance Programme Consulant, UK Sport
Perry Crimmins, Project Manager, Sport England
John Eady, Manading Director, Knight, Kavanagh and Page
Trudi Else, Client Manager, Sport England
Martin Henlan, Broadcaster/Journalist UKTV, ex England & GB International
David Henwood, Management Consultant, ex Deputy CEO Gloucester RFC
Tony Mallin (Chair), CEO, STAR Capital Partners
Stephen Redwood, President and CEO (UK), Mercer Delta Consulting
Michael Sorkin, Vice Chairman, N M Rothschild & Sons
Dr Neil Tunnicliffe, Principal, Wharton Consulting, former CEO Rugby Football League
Lisa Wainwright, Head of National Sport, Sport England

Endorsed by the likes of of NBA Commissioner David Stern, the CEO of Euroleague Jordi Bertomeu, and both GB stars Luol Deng and Pops Mensah-Bonsu, it had a gravitas and list of endorsers that previous reviews lacked and was hoped to be the driver of change for basketball to capitalise on the London 2012 Olympics.

Martin Henlan, the only person in the review group from a basketball background has spoken at length about the review on the Hoopsfix Podcast.
