Bristol Flyers Basketball Team

Bristol Flyers
The Bristol Flyers are a professional basketball team based in Bristol, England. They compete in the British Basketball League (BBL), the top-tier basketball league in the United Kingdom.

History

Bristol Flyers basketball club was established in 2006 after two teams, Filton Flyers and Bristol Academy merged.

Filton Flyers had won the South West division in 2005-06 to get promoted to NBL Division 2, where they competed as Bristol Academy Flyers for their first season. The new-look team went on to have a very successful season, finishing Division 2 in second place with a 19–3 win record, and gained promotion to Division 1.

In their Division 1 debut, they had a sporadic form but improved their performance towards the end of the season, achieving a respectable fourth-placed finish, as they would become a Division 1 powerhouse over the next six years.

On 17 June 2013, it was announced that the club had received financial backing from Stephen Lansdown, owner of Bristol City Football Club and the ‘Bristol Sport Ltd’ group. As part of the deal, the club would be entering into the top-level British Basketball League (BBL) for the 2014–15 season as its newest franchise and rebranding itself as the Bristol Flyers (from 2014).

Arena

SGS College Basketball Arena
The Bristol Flyers play their home games at the SGS WISE Arena, located on the campus of South Gloucestershire and Stroud College in Bristol. The arena has a capacity of 800 and is recognised as a venue too small for the BBL, hence why the Flyers revealed plans for their own 4,000 seat arena to be built.

Rivalries

The Bristol Flyers have developed several rivalries over the years, most notably with the Plymouth Raiders, which is their local derby.

Bristol Flyers Ownership

The Bristol Flyers are owned by Bristol Sport Ltd, a company that also owns several other sports teams in the city, including Bristol City FC and Bristol Bears RFC.
