What is the Best Basketball Net to Buy?

best basketball net string or chain
Are you looking for a replacement basketball net for your local hoop?

You’ve got your outdoor basketball already, so whether its an in-ground basketball hoop at your house, a portable basketball hoop on your driveway, or a local basketball court, having a net on your hoop makes all the difference – there are few things more satisfying than the sound of a swish on a hoop with a net.

You ultimately have two main options when it comes to basketball nets; either nylon or steel chain. If you want to skip our details below, here are our picks for the best basketball nets:

Best chain basketball net:
Trixes & Champion
Best nylon basketball net: Better Line

Generally, if it’s a children’s basketball net, that is height adjustable and they can reach it, you might want to stick with nylon, but otherwise, the sound of a chain basketball net is pretty alluring!

So, you need a replacement basketball net only and don’t know what to choose, let’s look at the options for both basket ball nets.

Premium Quality Nylon Net Only

Nylon string basketball net whiteThe replacement basketball net you are most likely to be looking for a nylon string all white net which is the standard default seen on most indoor and outdoor rims.

You should be looking for something that is made to last and withstand all weather elements so you can use both indoors and outdoors, which is why we recommend the Better Line nylon let.

As with most hoops, it comes with 12 loops, to fit on standard rims which have 12 hooks to attach it to. Super easy to install, you can have your string net up and running asap!

A lot of people also like blue, white and red nets – it’s not our personal preference, but if that’s what you’re after click here.

Heavy Duty Chain Net Only

Basketball chain net only
Ideal for all weathers, you can use indoors or outdoors, though you are way more likely to see chain hoops on outdoor hoops.

A good chain net – usually a steel net – will have build-in S mounting hooks to fit most hoops which have the standard 12-hook design. Though there are some very thick options available, we prefer medium, so the ball still falls through in good time and it is less wear and tear on the ball.

Basketball Nets FAQ

How do you replace a basketball net?

It depends on the set up of your hoop, but you usually will need:

1) A replacement net – chain or nylon (see above!)
2) A ladder or step ladder
3) A friend for security
4) Tape if your hoop does not have hooks
5) Scissors

It’s pretty self explanatory from there. Climb the supported ladder (by your friend), take the scissors to cut down any of the old net left off if there are remains, then take the new net and either hook it on, or tape/cable tie it if there are no hooks (see below).

Are all basketball nets the same size?

Most nets measure approximately 21 inches long, have 12 hooks, whilst the top of the net needs to fit 18 inches (46 cm) in diameter for a regulation hoop – that fits exactly two basketball in it.

How do you replace a basketball net without hooks?

You have two options – tape or cable ties.

I’ve tried cable ties to connect nets many times, but generally have found if they are hit at the right angle by the ball they get knocked completely off and you’re back to square one.

Meanwhile, tape is the best option. You want some durable hard wearing tape – we recommend Duct tape, and it’s simply a case of getting up on your ladder and taping around every loop to the rim to make it as permanently stuck as possible.

Eventually, it will wear off, but it’s a good solution for a few months, and if your hoop doesn’t have hooks, you don’t have a lot of other choice.
