Jeremy Sochan joins Knicks after Spurs release

Former top-10 pick Jeremy Sochan is on the move after being waived by the San Antonio Spurs and quickly snapped up by the New York Knicks.

San Antonio confirmed on February 11 that Sochan had been released, ending his four-year stint with the franchise that drafted him ninth overall in the 2022 NBA Draft.

Sochan, who came up in the UK with the Milton Keynes Trojans and the Solent Kestrels, appeared in 28 of the Spurs’ 53 games this season, averaging 4.1 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.0 assist in 12.8 minutes per game. With the Spurs surging to a 38-16 record entering the All-Star break – third best in the NBA – rotation minutes had become increasingly difficult to come by.

Across parts of four seasons in San Antonio, the 22-year-old averaged 10.4 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 212 games (149 starts). He was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team in 2022-23 after posting 11.0 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game, and later set career highs in scoring (11.6 ppg) and assists (3.4 apg) during the 2023-24 campaign.

Drafted out of Baylor, where he was named Big 12 Sixth Man of the Year and All-Big 12 Freshman Team in 2021-22.

The ex-England Under-15 never did obtain his British passport and made the switch to Poland at U16 level, and then became the youngest player in Polish Men’s National Team history when he competed against Romania in a FIBA EuroBasket qualifier in February 2021 at the age of 17.

Sochan became the seventh-fastest Spur in franchise history to reach 1,500 points and 1,000 rebounds.

But with San Antonio’s internal development – including expanded roles for Julian Champagnie and Keldon Johnson – Sochan found himself squeezed out of the rotation. Trade rumours had linked him to New York at the deadline, and though no deal materialised at the time, the Knicks ultimately got their man via the waiver wire.

Two days after being cut, the Knicks announced they had signed the 6’8” forward.

New York, widely viewed as favourites to emerge from the Eastern Conference, have struggled defensively at times this season. Sochan is expected to compete for minutes off the bench alongside rookie Mohammed Diawara and could provide valuable frontcourt depth next to Karl-Anthony Towns.

Speaking at All-Star Weekend, Spurs guard Stephon Castle admitted Sochan’s departure would be felt in the locker room.

“It’s an everyday thing with Jeremy… we gonna miss him for sure,” Castle said. “I’m happy to see him in a situation that he feels is better for him. I just wanna see him have his joy back while playing basketball.”

Castle added that despite limited minutes, Sochan’s professionalism never wavered.

“I think he handled it as best as he could. Obviously, he wasn’t getting the minutes that he wanted. I don’t think his demeanour or his body language really changed. In practice, he brought the same energy… I think he handled it like a pro.”
