BBL Week 9 Headlines: Scorchers halt Flyers, Riders drop to sixth

Another weekend of action in the British Basketball League saw another surprising result along with some high-scoring battles.

Scorchers halt Flyers

Surrey Scorchers picked up their third league win of the season as they defeated high-rising Bristol Flyers 80-75. Quin Cooper top scored with 23 points as the Scorchers outscored their opponents 26-18 in the final quarter with successive triples from Padiet Wang proving crucial.

Lions, Phoenix inflict Riders misery

It was a tough weekend for Rob Paternostro’s side as they dropped down to sixth with a 6-6 record after back-to-back losses to London and Cheshire. The Riders went down 95-102 to the Lions on Friday night’s Sky game as Donte Grantham, Connor Morgan and Gabe Olaseni all had 20+ points for the visitors.

Cheshire then moved into second spot following Bristol’s loss as they recorded an impressive 102-96 triumph behind a big second half display with Ethan Chargois posting 23 points, eight rebounds and six assists.

Eagles at the double

Newcastle Eagles closed the gap on those above them with two important victories to back up another European success in midweek. They first saw off Manchester Giants in a 97-85 success with Jordan Johnson posting a game-high 23 points and seven assists before Rickey McGill had 23 points in their dominant 68-95 victory at Plymouth City Patriots.

Elsewhere, Sheffield Sharks defeated Surrey 81-78 on Thursday before falling to a 73-64 loss away to Caledonia Gladiators as the hosts improved to 7-3 in the league.
