MVP Holly Winterburn: “There was definitely extra motivation”

Holly Winterburn spoke of having ‘extra motivation’ after producing an MVP performance to help London Lions to the WBBL Cup title against her former side, on Sunday.

The 22-year-old finished with 16 points, five rebounds and nine assists in the 95-42 triumph over Leicester Riders in Birmingham in another impressive all-round display.

Winterburn left the Riders for London in the summer of 2021 and this was the first time coming against her former side in a major final.

“It was definitely extra motivation,” Winterburn said in the post-game press conference. “We did our talking on the court. We’re going to stay at the top, stay at that level and it’s up to everyone else to come and join us. We’re not backing down.

“We set the tempo from the start. It’s testament to our practice and our preparation. Obviously having EuroCup experience, every day we come in and work hard and this game was no different.”

Winterburn has now won eight pieces of silverware in the WBBL including becoming the first player to win the Cup three times. Only Ta’Yani Clark has won more in the WBBL with nine titles with multiple Sevenoaks Suns players also on eight.
