2001 born Kareem Queeley is set to earn his first Great Britain Senior Men’s cap later today, as he has been included in Marc Steutel’s 12-man squad against Montenegro.
Queeley, who plays for San Pablo Burgos in Spain’s ACB, is a late inclusion to replace Newcastle Eagles’ Ref Pflueger in the squad, who played 3 minutes in GB’s tough 79-56 loss to France on Friday night.
The squad’s chances of EuroBasket 2022 qualification took a hit on Friday night and a loss against Montenegro could be all but fatal.
“It’s a different kind of game but for both teams there’s probably a lot of pressure on the game,” GB Head Coach Marc Steutel said.
“We know they’re well organised, well coached, talented. They’ve had a core together, they’ve played in the world cup and they’ve kept that group together – albeit with a new Head Coach.
“I think us and and Montenegro both know what to expect. They’ll be aware of our strengths and we’re aware of theirs. It’s going to come down to who can execute better on the day. As I say, the competition structure gives us no time to dwell on anything so we’ll dust ourselves off and be the best prepared we can for Sunday.”
Montenegro come into the game off the back of an 80-74 win over a young Germany side on Friday night, whilst elsewhere in the group, France will face off against Germany earlier this afternoon at 2pm.
The GB game is available to watch free in the UK via livebasketball.tv but sign up is required.
