The British Basketball Federation has been awarded up to £180,000 by UK Sport.
The money is to help lessen the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic. The move will help support the GB Men and GB Women’s squads in their forthcoming international home games, scheduled for November.
The money has been awarded from a £1.38million Continuity Fund established by UK Sport to help national governing bodies mitigate the operational and financial impact of the pandemic.
Maurice Watkins CBE, Chair of British Basketball Federation, said: “I am delighted that our application to UK Sport has been successful. “This additional funding comes at a vital time as our senior teams prepare for international home games. We are extremely grateful to UK Sport for looking on our bid favourably. “Basketball is a vital and ever-growing part of the sporting landscape across England, Scotland and Wales. We have been on an important developmental curve over the last two years with both our senior programmes showing substantial improvements in their performances. “This cash injection will help us to continue this progress going into November’s games.â€
The GB Men are schedule to play France (26 November) and Montengro (29 November) both at home, while the GB Women are due to host Poland on 15th November. The games are FIBA EuroBasket 2022 and Women’s EuroBasket 2021 qualifiers.
We have a tiny favour to ask. In 2018 we set out to make Hoopsfix sustainable by building our relationship directly with our readers. Up until now, Hoopsfix has been creating editorials, videos and podcasts to provide sorely missing coverage of the British game and its distinct culture and community.
We have funded Hoopsfix with our freelance work creating basketball media, but sadly that means not only does it fall behind our client’s priorities, but some of those clients are the same organisations we need to report objectively on putting us in a conflicted position.
We want to devote more time to our mission of helping British basketball reach its potential, and produce even more content for the basketball community by making Hoopsfix a sustainable 100% independent business funded directly by our readers through Patreon.
If everyone who enjoys our content chose to support us, our future would be much more secure. For as little as $3 per month, you can support Hoopsfix – and it only takes a minute.
We are tremendously honoured and humbled to have a community of people who value what we do, and we look forward to being at the forefront of the British game as it continues to evolve.
