SURREY OFFER RICHARDS A FITNESS FIX

Surrey Scorchers have signed former NBA second round draft pick Ryan Richards on a short-term deal.

The much-travelled Great Britain international began the campaign in Taiwan but was released after sustaining a back injury.

However, with a desire to regain full fitness before pursing an overseas move in the New Year, Richards turned to long-term mentor Creon Raftopoulos to practice with the Scorchers before agreeing to bring the ex-San Antonio Spurs draftee on board in a huge boost for the BBL strugglers.

“We consider ourselves very lucky that Ryan was happy to help us out over the next few games,” Raftopoulos said.

“He is a very high calibre player which will really give the team a much-needed boost whilst we look to fill our forward roster spots.

“His experience at the top level will be vital for the young players on our roster. We’re very excited to have him with us, and we hope the Scorchers fans are too.”

Richards said: “I’ve always had a great relationship with Coach Creon, and I’ve honestly missed playing the game during the season break.

“He is a big supporter of the way I play as I’m not a traditional big, so I’m hoping I can bring some more versatility to the Scorchers’ offensive game.”

Richards will be available for selection at this weekend’s BBL Trophy first round tie against Worthing Thunder.
