New Basketball Facility Tentatively Planned for Bristol

Bristol could be the latest city to have new basketball facility after plans have been revealed for a new 3,000 seat venue primarily for BBL side Bristol Flyers, the Bristol Post reports.

Intending to be built next to Bristol City’s ground, it will represent an upgrade on Flyers’ current venue of SGS College in Filton, but will not be basketball-only; the facility is also hoped to be used by badminton, boxing and live entertainment events.

Ashton Gate Ltd – the sister company to Bristol Sport, who own the Flyers – are the organisation behind the plans.

Interestingly, in addition, there are hopes to build a triple-court basketball hall next to the proposed arena, with the council document that the Post has seen aiming to replicate the National Basketball Performance Centre in Manchester.

It states: “From a basketball – and England Basketball – perspective, the ideal for this would be a set up akin to that of the National Basketball Performance Centre in Manchester which comprises a central show court just marked out for basketball with two other courts marked out for basketball and netball.

“The Manchester centre also has bleacher seats enabling it to be set up to accommodate basketball matches and tournaments which attract smaller crowds.”
