- National Teams
England’s Women now know who they will face at the 2018 Commonwealth Games after the seedings and pools were announced for next year’s tournament.
They will be the only representative of the home nations in the women’s tournament – with Scotland missing out on a place – and will go up against Australia, Canada and Mozambique in Group A.
Basketball England announced that coaches and player announcements will be revealed closer to the tournament, that starts in April next year.
The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation CEO Mark Peters commented:
“Today’s announcement represents an exciting day for our event cities Townsville and Cairns, as the match schedule is starting to take shape and the anticipation is starting to build with just 241 days remaining before the Games begin.
“Townsville will have the pleasure of hosting the Opals (Australia’s female team) as they look to defend their Commonwealth Games gold medal from 2006 and will also see both the men’s and women’s teams from England.
“Both Townsville and Cairns have a proud history and association with Basketball in Australia so we know that the people of North Queensland are going to get behind these teams and create a great atmosphere during the preliminary matches.”
Due to the way the tournament has been split, both England men and women teams will play their preliminary pool games in Townsville, Queensland between the 5th and 10th April 2018.
If the teams are successful and move on from pool play, both sides will be able to travel down the Queensland coast as the finals are held at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre, just south of Brisbane from 13-15 April 2018.
The complete pools for the women’s competitions are as follows (seeding in brackets):
Women’s Pool A – Preliminary games in Townsville
Women’s Pool B – Preliminary games in Cairns
The complete games schedules for the Basketball preliminaries will be announced in the coming weeks.
