- National Teams
England and Scotland’s route to potential Commonwealth Games medals in 2018 became a lot clearer on Sunday with the announcement of the pools and team seedings for next year’s tournament.
England are seeded fifth (of eight), whilst Scotland – drawn in the same pool – are seeded eighth. Both sides will be grouped along with Cameroon and India in Pool B; the top two teams from each pool automatically advance to the semi-finals, whilst the bottom 2 teams in Pool A face off against the top 2 teams from Pool B, with the winners completing the semi-final line up.
The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation CEO Mark Peters commented:
“Today’s announcement represents an exciting day for our event cities Townsville and Cairns, as the match schedule is starting to take shape and the anticipation is starting to build with just 241 days remaining before the Games begin.
“Townsville will have the pleasure of hosting the Opals (Australia’s female team) as they look to defend their Commonwealth Games gold medal from 2006 and will also see both the men’s and women’s teams from England. Both Townsville and Cairns have a proud history and association with Basketball in Australia so we know that the people of North Queensland are going to get behind these teams and create a great atmosphere during the preliminary matches.”
Due to the way the tournament has been split, both England and Scotland will play their preliminary pool games in Townsville, Queensland between the 5th and 10th April 2018. If the teams are successful and move on from pool play, both sides will be able to travel down the Queensland coast as the finals are held at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre, just south of Brisbane from 13-15 April 2018.
The complete pools for the men’s competitions are as follows (seeding in brackets):
Men’s Pool A – Preliminary games in Cairns
New Zealand (3)
Men’s Pool B – Preliminary games in Townsville
The complete games schedules for the Basketball preliminaries will be announced in the coming weeks.
