England U16s Open Europeans with Ireland Victory

England Under-16 men had a successful start to their 2016 Division B European Championship campaign with a 65-50 win over Ireland on Thursday.

Jacob Round had 21 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 7 steals to lead England, Mate Okros had 12 of his 14 points in the first half, and Kareem Queeley had 9 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals. Arinze Emeka-Anyakwo and Richard Amaefule had 16 and 13 rebounds respectively.

“The first game of the Euros is never easy and we also know that Ireland will never stop fighting and make it difficult right to end,” Head Coach Alan Keane said.

“Key players off the bench contributed in key moments, along with excellent shooting from Jacob Round and Mate Okros. We treat every game as if it’s the final game. Now our thoughts are about Hungary and the threats and opportunities that await us tomorrow.”

England secured the lead at the end of the first quarter and didn’t give it up the rest of the way, using a dominant 22-10 second period and Okros’ three point shooting to gain a cushion.

Box score.

England return to action on Friday against Hungary, tipping off at 2pm UK time.
