Worthing Thunder’s Tom Ward knocks down the pull up three with 2.2 seconds left to lead his squad to a 93-90 win over Derby Trail Blazers in Men’s NBL Division 1 on Saturday night.
After a double timeout, Derby’s Chris Taylor had a chance to take the game to overtime, but his heavily contested three-pointer was way off the target, leaving the home fans free to celebrate.
Ward finished with 19 points, as this final bucket was his only three of the game. Trail Blazers guard Sydney Donaldson had hit a four-point play with 15 seconds left to tie the game at 90-90 but Ward’s heroics denied Derby a chance to confirm runners-up spot in the league.
“It was a great performance and I’m glad that we have given our fantastic home supporters something to celebrate,” Worthing Coach Daniel Hildreth said afterwards.
“Our determination, solid defence in the clutch, terrific, unselfish teamwork and great shooting throughout gave us the win. Credit to Derby for giving us another thrilling game and I’m sure they will do well in the Playoffs but we want to finish the season on a high and we deserved this tonight.”
