England U16s Finish Easter Tournament with Heavy Defeat to Spain

England under-16’s finished their Easter Cup tournament in Slovakia on Sunday with a 108-52 loss to Spain, who were bronze medalists at last year’s European Championships in Division A.

Jacob Round and Caleb Fuller top scored for England with 9 points apiece with minutes spread throughout the roster in the final game of their preparation tournament ahead of this summer’s Euro’s.

Alan Keane’s side held their own in the early stages and were only down two at 13-11 with four minutes left in the opening quarter. Spain took over and produced a 15-5 close to the first to take a 28-16 lead. A 3-pointer from Round briefly got England back within 10 points, but Spain then went on a 23-2 run to go into half-time with a commanding 55-24 cushion.

The second half was a similar story as the Spaniards ran out convincing winners with all five starters hitting double figures to complete the routine victory.

England finish the tournament with an 0-3 record, but will be frustrated with themselves after giving up early leads in their first two games against Slovakia and Poland.

They are next scheduled to be in action in a series against Sweden in June 19th-21st with the venue to be confirmed, although it is likely to be at Oaklands College.
