Loughborough Student Women’s Basketball win BUCS Championship

Loughborough University won the BUCS #BigWednesday women’s basketball championship yesterday, beating out Northumbria University 66-55 to win the championship for the second time in three years.

Last years champions Northumbria Struggled offensively in the opening quarter, failing to take advantage of opportunities, leading to a 25-12 loughborough lead, thanks to some impressive shooting from captain Rheanne Bailey.

Loughborough forward Maaja Bratka made sure the second quarter was mostly the same, being to much for Northumbira to handle on both ends of the court. This and the packed out home crowd at the Sir David Wallace Arena inspired Loughborough to a 14 point lead going in to the half.

After the half time break Northumbria regrouped behind British guard Nicolette Fong Lyew Quee and Fiona O’Dwyer to pull back momentum from Loughborough, and tie the game just after the start of the fourth.

The fourth quarter was close throughout, with both team fighting hard to gain the victory in the final minutes. But with consecutive big plays from Maia Bratka and Georgia Jones Loughborough opened a small lead that was enough to hold on for the victory.

Maaja Bratka was the key to Loughborogh’s victory, accumulating 23 points and 17 rebounds, while Natalie Chaloner added 10 points and 7 rebounds.
