BASKETBALL ESCAPES ENGLISH CUTS
Basketball England has escaped the immediate wrath of Sport England despite a small drop in participation numbers.
After failing to meet targets agreed between them and Sport England in 2013/14, £1.53 million has been removed from four governing bodies: swimming, rugby league, equestrianism and gymnastics with their funds, a mixture of National Lottery and government funding intended to get more people playing sport, to be reinvested in alternative projects to explore new ways of producing better results in those sports.
There was fears that basketball’s governing body, which saw its cash grant sliced in 2014 due to its performance and which remains on restricted funding, would see a further removal following Sport England’s most recent Active People Survey.
However its future financing remains up in the air due to questions over its governance with the public agency understood to have expressed grave concerns over recent conflicts of interests on its board and the oversight provided amid the issue of awarding the BBL licence.
Sport England Chief Executive, Jennie Price, said: “Sometimes we need to take tough decisions to protect our much needed investment in grassroots sport. Today is one of those times.
“We invest significant sums of money in national governing bodies of sport to get more people active. But we can’t ignore falling numbers and missed targets where we believe there is scope for improvement, and in those circumstances we will divert money to projects that we believe will have more impact.”
