Basketball Wales Appoint Former BE CEO Keith Mair as New Head Coach

Former Basketball England CEO Keith Mair has been appointed as the new Head Coach for the Wales Senior Men’s national basketball team.

Mair led the New Zealand side to Olympics qualification in 2000, and more recently served as the CEO of Basketball England from 2003-2013.

“I am very pleased to take on this role,” Mair said. “I would hope to be able to support and develop our coaching network and also benefit the progression of International and elite Basketball in Wales through my experiences of working in New Zealand and England Basketball.”

Darren Oakey, Director of Elite National Development and board member of Basketball Wales said: “I am absolutely delighted that we have been able to secure the services of Keith. I am very excited about the wealth of knowledge and experience he can bring to all areas of our International Programme. We are looking forward to releasing the new training calendar for the Senior Men’s preparation for the 2016 European Championships along with the new Head Coach’s support staff very soon.”

Back in November, Basketball Wales announced their decision to join the British Basketball Project with CEO and Chairman of Basketball Wales Justin Ogleby hoping it would help secure the ‘long-term future’ of the sport in Wales.

“Keith joining our Elite Programme demonstrates our commitment to improving the standards and progression of our elite teams and athletes,” he said on the appointment. “We are hoping that Keith’s involvement in our development programme will be cascaded down to regional and grass roots development. We are seeing increased participation and this will act as a further catalyst to change and growth. We are thrilled to have him on board.”
